At my next job, I felt like I was ready to try out some of the concepts I was reading about. I had just finished the unenviable task of patching dozens of bespoke tools to support a new peripheral. Solving 80% of the problem was reasonably straightforward, but the last 20% had me doing absurd contortions like defining a bidirectional algebra for specifying the structure of a serial number string. Remember that the pure fifth you get from harmonics is a frequency ratio of 3/2. In 12-TET, however, you make a fifth by adding up seven semitones. This means that you multiply your frequency by the 12th root of two seven times, which comes to about 1.498. That’s close to 3/2, but it’s not exact.
